Edgewood Elementary School goals are to create a positive and safe learning environment for their students. To increase academic performance and decrease behavioral issues across all students (Edgewood Elementary School-Greenfield School District).
Bayside Middle School goals are to create a learning community that promotes respect, responsibility and accountability. To provide learning environments that students are fully engaged in and performing the best they can (Fox Point-Bayside School District).
Demographics of the community
Edgewood Elementary School
Bayside Middle School
The City of Greenfield is a suburban community and is made up of a multiple ethnicities like, White Caucasians, Hispanics, American Indian, Asian, African American, and Pacific Island. White Caucasians make up the majority of Greenfield’s population and Hispanics are the second largest population in Greenfield (City of Greenfield).
The Village of Bayside is a small community that is made up of multiple ethnicities like, White Caucasians, African Americans, Asians and Hispanics. White Caucasians make up the majority of the Village of Bayside’s population and African Americans are the second largest population (Village of Bayside). Bayside Village is not a very diverse community.
Enrollment by Race/Ethnicity
Edgewood Elementary School
The graph shows a positive trend in Hispanics enrollment at Edgewood Elementary. Another trend I noticed was with the enrollment of American Indian and how it is very up and down. The 2010-2011 percentage surprises me because when walking the halls at Edgewood there appears to be a high percentage of American Indian students enrolled.
Bayside Middle School
The graph shows a positive trend in the Asian enrollment at Bayside Middle. Another trend that I noticed was the enrollment for the African Americans is very up and down. It shows in 2010-2011 the African American enrollment increased compared to past years. Also the majority of their enrollment is White Caucasians, which remains constant throughout the years. The enrollment of race/ethnicity reflects greatly on the demographics of the community.
Student Performance on WKCE by Race/Ethnicity
Edgewood Elementary School
Reading WKCE: I think that there is more minimal performance in the combined group because English might not be their first language and reading comprehension might be difficult for them. I think it is impressive that overall both groups were average and above, which shows how Edgewood Elementary sets high academic expectations in the classroom for the students to expand their knowledge. Math WKCE: I thought that the Combined Group would overall have a less minimal performance because math is universal. But I could see if there were quite a few word problems that maybe some students, who fall into this group, would struggle with the comprehension of the problem. Overall, again majority of the test scores in both groups are average or above which shows that all students are learning at Edgewood Elementary School.
Bayside Middle School
The overall WKCE the race groups of Hispanic, African American and Asians did not have enough students enrolled during the test taking to create an accurate percentage of where they placed. But the White Caucasians were majority scored in advance proficiency as well as the Combined Small Number group, which is a mix of different races/ethnicities. Overall the graph shows that more than half of the students are achieving in the advance proficiency.
Student Performance on WKCE by Disabilities
Edgewood Elementary School
The tables below show students with a disability from 4th and 5th grade who took the WKCE. In both tables it shows that there were less than half of students with a disability who took the standardize test. I think that both of these tables show great progress of the students with disabilities and gives hope to other families and students with disabilities.
Bayside Middle School
The results of student performance on the WKCE by disabilities did not have enough students enrolled during the test taking to create an accurate percentage of where they placed. There are many students with disabilities that are included in the general education classrooms.
Student Performance on WKCE by English Proficiency
Edgewood Elementary School
When looking at the different subjects tested, Math was the one subject with a higher Minimal Proficient for students with Limited English Proficient. But the percentage scored in the Advanced was higher than the other subjects tested. I think that it is interesting that math is universal but yet there are still cultural differences causing some students having difficulties with math and other subjects.
Bayside Middle School
The results of student performance on the WKCE by English Proficiency did not have enough students enrolled during the test taking to create an accurate percentage of where they placed. This reflects the small percentage of Hispanics in the community and enrolled at Bayside Middle School.
Phase 2
I was able to interview my general education teacher. Mrs. Schaub is the 6th grade Science teacher at Bayside Middle School. Mrs. Schaub and I discussed how when looking at the demographic statistics of Bayside Middle School and herself there was a big difference between economic status. Majority of the students at Bayside Middle School come from wealthy families. Mrs. Schaub said that though there is a difference in their economical status it does not have implications on the individual student learning in her classroom. She did mention that it has helped the school expand their resources throughout educational departments because of the various donations and family support that they have at the school. The families have also helped Mrs. Schaub expand her knowledge on different cultures throughout the school as well.
When discussing the “funds of knowledge” she said that there is a larger Jewish population at Bayside Middle School and she has been fortune enough to expand her knowledge on that culture. Students throughout the years have helped her to understand the Jewish culture and traditions that they celebrate. Bayside Middle School does now have certain “breaks” that fall on different Jewish holidays because there is such a large population of Jewish students.
We also discussed how she brings in current articles and news into her classroom for her students. She uses a Science World Magazine from Scholastic’s that provides her students with up to date information about science that is happening in the world. She also has recently started to have her students journal on a current issues that she prompts them with. They then are to take the prompt home and discuss it with their parents to see if they have more information on the topic. She is trying to not only bring connections to current issues in the world but also to get their parents involved in science and what her students are doing in class. She just started the journal in the beginning of the month and it has been successful.
Mrs. Schaub has also been able to expand her knowledge of technology from her students as well. Now being the 21st century she said that her students help her daily with what technology is used now a day. She uses computers, laptops and her SMART Board daily in her classroom. The students enjoy the SMART Board because it is interactive and they are able to use it in the classroom as a resource for presentations and looking up different topics.
When talking with her about the interview questions we had good discussions relating to her teaching position now at Bayside but also how this position is very different then her previous teaching positions. She was very knowledgeable about many different topics concerning education and I enjoyed the opportunity to expand some of my knowledge about education.
Phase 3 While at my placement at Bayside Middle School I observed a lot of parent involvement within the school. Parents come in and do lunch duty as well as recess duty. Other ways I have seen parents get involved is through different clubs offered at the school, field trips and also parent teacher communication. When talking with my two cooperating teachers they both said that they are constantly communicating with their student’s parents. Mrs. Ellsworth, special education teacher, frequently calls or receives calls from parents about the student’s day or if something has happened that is important. These phone calls are usually positive and really helps her and the parents to stay on the same page. Bayside Middle School is located in an area where the majority of the students come from high-income homes. Though the student’s economic status is high-income there is still a small achievement gap. Students who fall below the in scores are apart of a program called Reading 180 which is a class that runs for two periods and they are working on their basic reading skills. Another way Bayside Middle School helps low achieving students is providing them with support throughout the school. There are aids and resource rooms where students are able to go to for extra help. The teachers also are very helpful with working with the students and setting them up for success. Overall Bayside Middle School is very supportive of their student’s academically and there personal growth. They students at Bayside Middle School are friendly and willing to help out other students who are struggling or students with disabilities. I was really surprised how warm and welcoming they students are to the students with serve cognitive disabilities. They are always ready to help them as well as socialize with them throughout the day. Bayside Middle School’s atmosphere is positive and safe for student learning and I think that is what helps them to achieve their high goals academically and for the student’s personal growth.
